Contrast Therapy FAQs
Why sauna before an ice bath?
When you experience a sauna before going in an ice bath, you can enhance recovery by reducing muscle soreness and inflammation. Heat causes blood vessels to dilate, while cold causes them to constrict, improving circulation. Sweating in the sauna removes toxins, and the contrast stimulates the nervous system, promoting mental clarity.
Are there additional benefits beyond physical?
Absolutely! Beyond physical benefits, sauna and ice bath therapy offer improved relaxation, decreased stress and a feeling of rejuvenation. Our sessions offer a safe space to focus on your mental wellbeing and shut out all outside distractions and concerns.
How long should I stay in the ice bath?
Start Gradually: Begin with shorter sessions, perhaps 10-15 minutes in the sauna, followed by a 30-second cold plunge. Each cycle of the session, you will find you can increase your aim for 3 minutes.
Listen to Your Body: While pushing your limits can be beneficial, it's crucial to respect your physiological boundaries.
How often should I use Contrast Therapy?
Consistency is Key: Aim for 1-3 sessions per week to start, this can be increased or decreased depending on your physical needs.
Stay Hydrated: The sweating induced by sauna use can lead to significant fluid loss. Ensure you're adequately hydrated before, during, and after your sessions.
How does an Ice bath compare to other recovery methods?
Ice baths offer unique benefits, particularly for muscle recovery, by reducing inflammation and speeding up healing. While other methods like foam rolling or stretching also help, ice baths are a potent recovery tool for quicker results.
Can I use contrast therapy for injuries?
Contrast therapy can be a great way to alleviate pain and inflammation caused by injuries, but it’s important to use it correctly and, depending on the injury, under the guidance of a healthcare professional. The cold ice bath helps to constrict the blood vessels, which can reduce blood flow and inflammation of the injured area. On the other hand, the warmth will increase mobility, which is ideal for long-term injuries and/or chronic pain or inflammation.
What temperature is the Sauna & Ice bath in my Contrast Therapy?
Our sauna is between 45-57°C, and our ice bath is between 5-14 °C. We offer beginners between 8-10°C; however, this is customisable. You are welcome to call us, and we can go down to 0°C or a temperature you are comfortable with.
Are there any risks or precautions for contrast therapy?
If you have any medical conditions, Cardiovascular disease, history of Stroke or Raynaud’s disease or cold urticaria, we recommend you talk to your doctor before jumping into an ice bath. It’s important to be extra careful. Of course, you can still enjoy, just the infrared sauna.
